MAIN ACTIVITIES / DISTINCTIONS

Our main research aims at the development of extremely miniaturised sensors, which are linked with intelligent interfaces to create wireless communication systems. Typical applications are in the biomedical field. Three main areas of research are focused on: sensors, sensor interfaces with intelligent signal conditioning and telemetry systems. Teaching the following courses: 'Production methods for electronic systems', 'Biomedical measurements and stimulation', 'Microsystems' and 'Seminars on sensorfabrication'.

Thanassis Misaridis received the B.E. and M.S. degrees in 1992 from the National Technical University of Athens in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He received the M.S. degree in 1997 from the Pennsylvania State University in Bioengineering, and the Ph.D. degree in 2001 from the Technical University of Denmark. He has been a research scientist at the Laboratoire Ondes et Acoustique in Paris, France until 2003. He is currently a collaborator of Kretz GE Medical Systems in conjunction with the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. His current research interests include coded excitation in medical ultrasound, array processing, synthetic aperture, non-linear imaging and underwater acoustics.

Academic Activities:

Since 1976 he was full professor in Applied Electronics and from 1980 up to the present, he has been full professor in Biomedical Engineering, directing the BME Unit at the Electronic Engineering Dept. of the Univ. "Federico II" of Naples. 

At present he is also professor in "Automation and Organization of Health Care System".

He also teaches Biomedical courses in the Post-graduate Schools of the Faculties of Medicine and Surgery at the Universities of Naples.

He directs in Naples the "Research Unit in Medical and Rehabilitation Engineering" of Italian National Research Council.

He was nominated Professor Honoris Causa at the Technical University of Cluj Napoca (Romania) Faculty of Electronic Engineering.

Prof. M. Bracale received the “Honoris Causa Degree” in Medicine and Pharmacy from the University of Iasi, Romania.

He is President of the Biomedical Engineering Course at the University of Naples.

 

Extra-Academic Activities:

He is the General Secretary of the "Associazione Italiana di Ingegneria Medica e Biologica" (AIIMB) Italian Member Society affiliated to I.F.M.B.E. (International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering), where from 1986 to 1991 he acted as Chairman of the Developing Countries Committee and the National Secretaries Committee. He is a board member of the "Division for Health Care Technology Assessment".

He acted as an expert Councilor in Clinical Engineering for Developing Countries on behalf of WHO, of Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and of "Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche" CNR. In 1985 and 1986 he had spent a period in Ethiopia, Yemen and Kenya to organise and direct an International and Technical course on the management and maintenance of medical equipment sponsored by WHO, IFMBE, DANIDA. In 1988 he was appointed director of an Italian project supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organise Clinical Engineering Centers in Ethiopia.

He participated as expert member in the Commission of the European Committee DGXIII for the implementation of the 4th Framework Programme (1994-1998) of Advance Informatics in Medicine.

He took part in the IMPROVE and TREAD projects of the Commission of the European Committee DGXII. He participated as rapporteur for AUDIT of AIM'93 Project. He was the organizer and General Secretary of MEDICON'92 and Health Telematics '95 Conferences In Ischia (Napoli – Italy), financially supported by EC DGXIII. He was an evaluator of the Programme "Innovative Actions of Regional and Local Development (Article 10 of the ERDF Regulation) of DGXVI, May 1996. He has been appointed rapporteur of the Evaluating Group of the projects on Health Telenmatics 1994-1998, Brussell, October 1996. He was the co-ordinator of the EC Concerted Action TELEPLANS - Telemedicine for citizens (DGXIII).

He was nominated by the local Regional Minister as expert in the Regional Commission of Health Emergency. He has been appointed by Italian Ministry of Health responsible of sub-project 4 "Telemedicine for the Emergency" within the G7 global project on health care (1997). He is the leader of the telemedicine Island Project with the Local Health Unit Napoli 2. Since March 2000 he is responsible and co-ordinator of Clinical Engineering activities at Local Health Unit Napoli 2 (Electrical safety of medical devices and Evaluation plan of risks). He is nominated for the year 2002 Representative of the IFMBE in consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council at the United Nation (Vienna). In 2003 he has been elected as member of the Academic Division of the Directive Council of EAMBES " European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering and Science".  He has been also nominated by the health Assessor of the Region "Prof. Rosalba Tufano"  as component of " Gruppo Tecnico per l'elaborazione di uno schema organizzativo per l'assistenza cardiologica nell'ambito del SIRES-118" He has been reconfirm as representative of University of Naples FEDEICO II and delegate of the Rector of the Directive Council of I.M.TE.S " Istituto Mediterraneo per la Telematica in Sanità" and he has been appointed President  of the Technical Scientific Committee of I.M.TE.S.

In 2003 Prof. Marcello Bracale has been elected Fellow of the International Academy for Medical and Biological Engineering.

 

Professional Activities:

He was Vice-President of the "Societa' Generale di Informatica" (SO.GE.I.). From 1990 to 1993 he was Regional President of the "Associazione Italiana Ospedalita' Privata" (AIOP) in Naples. He is a professional consultant of "Clinica Villalba", a private hospital; and of "Technical Data Control", a software house for Informatics Health Care Systems in Naples. He is scientific consultant of FINSIEL for the European Committee and for International and National activities in Telematics Health Care System. He is a member of the International and Italian Electrotechnical Commission-Technical Committee n.62: Electrical Equipment in Medical Practice, Sub-Committee 62D: Electromedical Equipment. He was appointed member of administration council of the CNETO (Centro Nazionale per l’Edilizia e la Tecnica Ospedaliera).

 

Scientific Activities:

His main fields of scientific and professional interest are: electronical and biological instrumentation; biosignal and data analysis; health care system and management; health telematics and telemedicine. At present he is author and co-author of  393 publications.

He is member of the Editorial Board of the following journals: Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing (Peter Peregrinus Ltd, UK), Frontiers of Medical and Biological Engineering (VSP, NL),

He is Professor in electronics, medical imaging and digital image processing at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel – VUB, director of the department of Electronics and Informatics – ETRO (http://www.etro.vub.ac.be/) at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, and coordinator of the research group on image processing and machine vision - IRIS. Current research projects of the IRIS group include: various applications in medical vision, remote sensing, mine- and minefield detection, and design of algorithms and computer architectures for image processing. His current research interest is mainly concentrated in the area of image and video compression. He is also Consultant Professor at Northwestern Polytechnic University, NPU-Xi’an, China.

Since 2001, he got involved in management of research and innovation as Vice-rector for research of VUB, chairman of the VUB research council, chairman of the board for strategic research in support of innovation, Member of the Flemish Scientific Research Council, vice-chairman of the research council of the Brussels Capital Region, Member of the board of directors of the Interuniversity MicroElectronics Centre – IMEC in Leuven, Vice-president of the DISC (Decision, Information, Science, Communication) Institute ‑ the ICT knowledge centre of the Brussels Capital Region, Chairman of the board of directors BI3 (Brussels I3 NV) – the  incubation fund of VUB.
